Here we go… I am soo fracking sick of straight characters being shoved into my comic books I could scream.
What started this rant? Well, a lifetime of reading superhero comics. Why should I care about which team members are dating each other? I can’t relate to that. Why should I care about these characters’ weddings? It’s not like I can imagine what it’d be like to marry the person I love (or to suddenly have the government offering all sorts of benefits to help my relationship endure through the tough times).

More why should I care about these straight superheroes having their weddings interrupted by people who think its all about winning some contest? It’s not like marriage is some sacred institution that doesn’t get turned into cheap melodrama.

I mean why should it matter that Starfire’s heart was broken, sending her into a murderous rage? What gets added to the story by forcing me to know about her sexuality?

Why do I have to be reminded that The Scarlet Witch had the hots for an android?

Just. Stop. Rubbing. It. In. My. Face.

(If you need an explanation…)

I am glad you got that off your chest. But - even more than most who end up in these dabates - can you really imagine someone who can make the “I’m not, so no one should be” argument even understanding your deft counter, much less changing their minds?
On a more positive note, I will now imagine a world where Wiccan can say to Stature “That monster killed the man I love!!!” on the cover of a published comic book.

Sadly, I didn’t even have to look to know what prompted this post. I’m sorry.

David, I don’t really expect to change any of those minds. However, I do think there are a good number of people who aren’t homophobic and just haven’t given much thought to how much we see of supereheroes’ sexuality.

I just read that guy’s post, and I can safely state that your point will go waayyy over his head.

-snerk-
And while everyone’s at it, can people please stop shoving romance into movies for little kids? It’s bad enough that princess stories must end with a wedding by definition, but do Lightnin’ McQueen and Woody really need love interests? Toy Story couldn’t just be a buddy movie? Really?
er, well…..hmmm, gee, maybe there is a reason why so many of these writers/directors/producers/etc. feel the need to make it clear that the characters are straight, dammit!
And, oh god, That first Uncanny X-Men cover is just….(sigh)

Actually, the Uncanny X-Men cover? Mastermind is trying to break up that couple.
Go fig.
And you can’t relate to stories where people are trying to ruin or break up someone else’s relationship?
I know for a fact that relationships, no matter the gender of those involved are capable of the same drama. I’ve watched one guy go behind the back of another guy to steal his boyfriend while acting all best-friendlike with him to his face.
And while it’s maybe comforting to say that, it’s not homophobia as such that has all these heterodominant storylines happening.
It’s genuine cluelessness and refusal to change because “this is how it’s always been.”
It’s just a case of hetero male writers not knowing anything but how to write what appeals to them and what they mistakenly believe appeals to hetero women. And when hetero women call them on it, they react the same way. “this is how it’s always been.”
They’re wrong about thinking what the rest of us will like just because they do.
But since they’re in charge, they can stick their fingers in their ears.
And inertia has a lot of people still reading anyway out of devotion to the characters, even when they have a problem with the sexuality or sexualization.
