You’re kidding me

Lovely. Within a few days of learning about Alex Ross’ homophobic comments about Obsidian (thanks Loren), I hear that Chuck Dixon will be writing a Midnighter comic (that link will change when I find a better one that’s less likely to expire).

The guy who wrote “I don’t want to expect to be able to shield my kids from the subject of homosexuality as the media seems intent on bringing into my home and nothing short of cutting the electricity and boarding the windows will stop it. But I DON’T want my kids reading about it in comics.” will be writing a character that’s been the motivation of many GLAAD media award nominations? (IIRC, The Authority never won.)

Lovely. I’m feeling a little more motivated about writing about dropping out of floppies.

    You’re welcome. ;)

I’m upset about Chuck Dixon writing Midnighter, too. It’ll be interesting to see how he deals with writing his homosexuality since there’s pretty much no way around it unless he tries to retcon him becoming straight — which would be the worst.

Dixon could just ignore Midnighter’s love life by keeping Apollo and Jenny out of the story (it looks like a mini from that solicit). That could turn out to be a step towards de-gaying the character, though it wouldn’t look that way at the time. If anything, I expect any anti-gay sentiment to be on the subtle side (more subtle than Uncle Sam punching OBL, at least) so that he can say “See, that wasn’t so bad.” Or maybe I’m too cynical.

Why wouldyou ask someone who doesn’t think homosexuality belongs in comics to write a character known as the gay Batman? That’s like asking a white supremacist to write Black Panther. [...]

[...] I recently learned through Ray from Super Underwear Perverts and Lyle from Crocodile Caucus that Chuck Dixon is going to be writing a six-part Grifter and Midnighter mini-series for Wildstorm. Now, Dixon’s homophobia is well documented and is one of the most conservative comic book writers out there. [...]

[...] You already knew the American comics industry was dumber than a bag of hammers, right? Here’s further proof: DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint has hired an anti-gay social conservative to write a book co-starring Midnighter, a gay superhero. Chuck Dixon, a longtime scripter well-known for his distain for homosexuals, will be writing a Grifter/Midnighter miniseries. The fuck…? Reaction to this bizarre bit of hiring news can be found from Lyle Misaki, Johanna Draper Carlson, Loren Javier and Dorian Wright.
