No speed lines, at least…

Since I hadn’t seen anyone reacting the way I did, I asked if anyone has commented on the cover to the SF Weekly issue containing that story about YAOICon that got so much attention.

When I first read the article online, my first thought was that, at least there wasn’t any talk about “big eyes and speed lines” then I went outside and saw the cover… there wasn’t any need to mention any manga/anime stereotypes since that cover said it all.

Then I reread the article and, realized there was the expected mention of big eyes:

Within the yaoi tradition, the ideal bishounen is usually slender and pale, with a heart-shaped face and enormous eyes, like two fishponds. His smooth pectoral muscles are hairless, but his head is covered by a tousled and feminine mop, with strands that fall fetchingly across his face when he’s feeling shy.

On a semi-related note, I think I’m ready to declare all “Gay men don’t like YAOI because…” (because either gay men aren’t into relationship stories, just wanting sex, or there isn’t enough political content in YAOI) the heterosexist equivalent of “All girls like Y: The Last Man, Sandman and Strangers in Paradise!”

[...] I find it funny the same day I write a post complaining about one-size-fits-the-whole-demo attitudes towards marketing, I read about GameStop’s idea of “Games 4 Girls”. Are any of those game big sellers that have a large female audience like The Sims or the Nancy Drew series (instead of games presumed to be popular with girls)? Sigh.   Read more about: Video Games — Lyle Masaki [...]

[...] You know that SF Weekly story on yaoi we were all talking about last week? Lyle has the cover art. [...]

I personally am completely disgusted by that cover. Not only does is suggest that Yaoi/Bl is about little boys [even if this article says otherwise] Ms. Strickland used images of RUSH in her article without mentioning the anthology, or any parts of the interview she had with Ms. Yokoshima who is in RUSH.

As for my other opinions on this article, I left those at PreCur.

[...] I didn’t ‘give’ good interview today. I want to apologize to Kai from PWCW. I was really off-center due to some behind the scenes creator drama, that, combined with my fuming over the latest round of BL-On-Display antics from certain outlets, all conspired to make me blah, in terms of a one on one, about me. Again, it was all industry talk and my thoughts on BL and it’s future. [...]
