NBC Pilots on Netflix

Netflix will be renting NBC fall preview DVDs featuring the pilots for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Kidnapped and extended promos for other fall debuts. The DVDs become available to Netflix subscribers on August 5.

I love the idea of this promotion tactic, but I wonder how many Nexflix subscribers will want to use up a rental slot on a TV show they’ll be able to watch for free in six weeks? Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip definitely has enough fans who can’t wait to get their first glimpse of the show, but is there that much interest in Kidnapped? I wonder why Heroes or 30 Rock didn’t get that spotlight instead, considering how much interest those two shows have inspired.

Of course, I’ve already gone and added both to my queue.

Eh. If Heroes had been on the release list, I’d add it to my queue. I’m curious enough about the show now to watch the first episode, and being able to see it up front would be a benefit.

The rest of em? Meh. Kidnapped MIGHT be fun, but the previews have done nothing for me, and while everyone seems to be all hyped about Studio 60, I’ve never really enjoyed TV shows about TV shows (Murphy Brown being an exception, I guess). Even Sports Night, which I could tell was objectively a well done show, I just couldn’t get into.

I’ll be trying them out, but I don’t think that I’ll be adding either of these to my queue at the moment. Maybe if some folks get them and have good things to say, I might pop them in there.

The interesting thing for me about Heroes is that the pilot is being screened at San Diego, making me wonder if NBC is trying to isolate various promotion techniques to get a feel for how to best use them. (It is an interesting question of which generates more talk… Netflix or San Diego Comic Con?)

I’m probably not going to watch Kidnapped, but I planned to check it out, so this makes it easier on my schedule.

    In the

about the early anti-Studiobacklash someone says about the show:

“It’s like ‘Entourage’ meets ‘Larry Sanders’ meets ‘The West Wing’ all wrapped up in ‘Sports Night.’ Good God, this is going to be amazing,” he wrote.

Goodness that sounds really tedious to me, even though I could appreciate each of those shows.

And, yet, I can’t wait for 30 Rock.

[...] It turns out that making two of its shows available on Netflix is only a part of the picture for NBC’s fall slate, feeling confident in their fall line-up, the Peacock network is trying to get all its shows screened before their broadcast premiere: NBC will premiere virtually all of its new fall shows either online or on DVD before they premiere on-air.
