Some quick thoughts…

Okay, unfortunately, I’m looking at a short term blog slowdown since I’ve been busy at work and my network card at home seems to have died on me… so I’m lacking in time and access. Some random thoughts:

  • Every time I see bloggers sniping at each other, I start hearing Julie Brown’s voice in my head singing “Blogfight tonight!” She needs to go a re-record that one…
  • Am I the only one thinking that Tom Peyer’s Superfrankenstien is the only spot on the internet made better by the presence of trolls? I’d almost if Peyer’s another blogger commenting under a pseudonym because his trolls complete his jokes a little too well.
  • In the discussion about sexism in superhero comics at Comics Worth Reading, I mention Birds of Prey. What I would have liked to add was that I recall Gail Simone joking that the BoP fans who had issues with Ed Benes art should just wait for an issue where she’d have Benes draw a couple of the guys oil wrestling to provide balance, a promise that (to my knowledge — if it did happen I’d love to hear it) wasn’t met during Benes’ run. Unfortunately, I can never think of Google search terms that wouldn’t leave me fearful at checking the results.
  • By the by, I conducted an interview with Marc Andreyko for Prism Comics. Honestly, I wish I had the time to do more research for this one, but I’m happy with the end result, considering the timeline.
  • Lastly, I feel the need to whine and ask why the New York Comic Con had such a manga presence while WonderCon had none when I attended last year? I’m not saying San Francisco’s a more important manga market than New York but one of the biggest publishers is local. (found at MangaBlog) I might check if things have gotten better by next year’s WonderCon, but in 2005 it wasn’t a comic con for a city with little interest in Asian pop culture or LGBT stories. Odd.
Hey, what’s that dead horse doing there?

I’m currently indulging in my re-discovered love of fantasy computer role playing games which is entirely David’s fault. I’m finally working my way through Bladur’s Gate 2 (my problem with the second game was the same as the first, there’s too much urgency in the first few chapters, leading me to skip over plenty of interesting side quests, eventually making me want to start the game over).

The urgency thing gets even worse towards the end of BG2. I’d really recommend you dawdle as much as you possibly can during the middle portion, because when it’s over, it’s over.

And I’m starting to notice a similar problem in Oblivion. I’m dawdling, but I’m wondering if I’m not making the main quest more difficult in the process.

I think I get too into the “role play” aspect and end up needing time to adjust to the idea that the proper response to “I can help you find your kidnapped friend” is “Well, maybe after I take care of the trolls terrorizing the Windswept Mountains.”

As much as I love the side-quests that BG brought us, I wish the umbrella story arc were a little more smoothly intergrated. (Planescape handled that really well, OTOH. Unfortunately, it’s the game with the quiet-but-devoted cult following. It’s the Gabriel Knight of RPGs.)
